There were no new deaths since Monday attributed to Covid-19, McMahon said. A total of 226 county residents have died from the virus.

Of the 175 new cases reported today, 18 occurred in senior residential facilities. That’s usually a concern for health officials because frail elderly patients are at high risk from the virus.

Out of everyone tested for coronavirus during the past seven days, the average rate of positive tests in the county was 3.6%, McMahon said. That’s down slightly from 3.9% a week ago.

The county today began testing people who have no symptoms in two areas of Syracuse that have experienced high positivity rates, contributing to the city’s designation as an orange zone. In ZIP codes 13208 and 13204 on the north and west sides of the city, the county tested 200 people today and uncovered two positive cases, for a positivity rate of 1%.
